we opened up farther, and here you can see the large gap at the bottom of the truss 'butt-joint'.....to the right of the opening....we then cut farther... |

we extended it by notching 2" off the original, to use the full 11" off the 2" x 12" pine... |

we spliced the top rail and overlapped for extra strength. And knowing that the whole thing had to match a 'distressed' furniture set made it a lot easier to forgive the 'rough framing'...we added this top cleat to give the overlap then rounded with the sander and scratched it with hammers and scrapers... |

and shot the first coat of stain...... |
